Installing and Testing HHO Check Valves Correctly

What Can Go Wrong Without a Check Valve

When the HHO system is off (engine running, system off), intake manifold vacuum can draw backwards through the HHO line. Without a check valve, this pulls water from the bubbler into the engine — potentially causing hydrolock (incompressible water in the cylinder bends a connecting rod). A check valve in the HHO line costs $5–$15 and prevents catastrophic engine damage.

Sizing the Check Valve

HHO flow rates at normal operation are 0.3–2.0 LPM (liters per minute). Most standard 1/4" check valves are sized for far higher flows and have low cracking pressure — fine for HHO use. Avoid check valves with cracking pressure above 0.5 PSI; excessive cracking pressure reduces HHO delivery at low system pressures.

Correct Installation Direction

Check valves have a flow direction indicated by an arrow on the valve body. Install with the arrow pointing from the bubbler toward the engine — flow is allowed in this direction (from cell to engine) but blocked in reverse (from engine back toward cell). Installing backwards blocks your HHO flow entirely.

Testing After Installation

With the system assembled, apply gentle mouth pressure to the bubbler outlet with the check valve installed — you should feel resistance only in the reverse direction. Alternatively, connect a vacuum source to the engine side of the check valve — no air should flow backward through a functional check valve. Visual inspection of the ball or flap seat confirms there's no debris blocking full closure.
