Hyundai Nexo: The Hydrogen SUV Testing the Mass Market
May 10, 2024 · 5 min read
The Hyundai Nexo brings hydrogen fuel cell technology to the SUV segment — appealing to a broader audience than the sedan-focused Toyota Mirai.
What Makes the Nexo Different
The Hyundai Nexo is positioned as a premium hydrogen SUV rather than a technology demonstrator. 5-seat SUV body, 61 cubic feet of cargo space, and a 413-mile EPA range (the highest of any hydrogen vehicle). The Nexo targets buyers who want hydrogen technology in a practical form factor they're already familiar with.
Technology Stack
The Nexo uses a 95 kW fuel cell stack, three carbon fiber hydrogen tanks (6.33 kg total capacity, 700 bar), and a 40 kWh hybrid battery that acts as buffer storage. The electric motor produces 161 hp and 291 lb-ft torque — not exciting on paper but the immediate torque delivery feels responsive in traffic.
Safety Systems
The Nexo includes hydrogen leak detection sensors that automatically close fuel shutoff valves and alert the driver. Tank integrity ratings meet 15-year life standards with multiple pressure test requirements. Crash safety uses the tanks' high-pressure carbon fiber construction to absorb energy, contributing to its IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating.
Ownership Costs
California hydrogen retail prices run $16–$25 per kilogram. At the Nexo's 60 mile/kg efficiency, this equates to $0.27–$0.42 per mile in fuel costs — more expensive than a BEV but competitive with gasoline at current California gas prices for average vehicles. Hyundai also provides fuel subsidies with new Nexo purchases.
