Hyundai NEXO: The Hydrogen SUV Leading the Fuel Cell Race
August 2, 2024 · 6 min read
The Hyundai NEXO is a capable hydrogen fuel cell SUV with 380-mile range, advanced ADAS features, and a practical crossover form factor that appeals to mainstream buyers.
NEXO at a Glance
The Hyundai NEXO is a dedicated hydrogen fuel cell crossover SUV, sold exclusively in California and select international markets. It represents Hyundai's flagship demonstration of hydrogen mobility technology, featuring their third-generation fuel cell system with improved durability and power density over the earlier Tucson Fuel Cell.
Powertrain
The NEXO's fuel cell stack produces 95 kW, driving a 120 kW (161 hp) electric motor and delivering 291 lb-ft of torque. Three hydrogen storage tanks hold 6.33 kg of hydrogen at 700 bar, providing an EPA-rated range of 380 miles — more than most battery EVs.
Real-World Efficiency
The NEXO achieves approximately 65 MPGe in city driving and 58 MPGe on the highway, for a combined 61 MPGe. Hydrogen consumption averages about 49 miles per kg. At current California hydrogen pricing (~$30–36/kg), fuel cost works out to roughly $0.60–0.75 per mile — higher than electricity but competitive with gasoline SUVs.
Advanced Technology
NEXO distinguishes itself with Level 2+ autonomous driving features including Highway Driving Assist II, Remote Smart Parking Assist, and Blind-Spot View Monitor. The interior air filtration system filters particulates down to 0.02 microns, marketing the vehicle as an "air purifier on wheels."
The Verdict
The NEXO is technically impressive and practical for California drivers near hydrogen stations. For mainstream adoption, it awaits the infrastructure buildout that only government investment can accelerate. As a technology showcase, it's arguably the most advanced hydrogen vehicle available today.
