Hydrogen Vehicles in 2025: What's Available and What's Coming

June 7, 2025 · 6 min read

The hydrogen vehicle market has expanded beyond Toyota and Hyundai. In 2025, commercial trucks, buses, and new passenger vehicle programs are bringing hydrogen into the mainstream.

Current Production Models (2025)

Toyota Mirai (2nd gen): continues production with incremental improvements. Hyundai Nexo: available in limited markets with expansion planned. Honda CR-V e:FCEV: plug-in hybrid fuel cell in California. BMW iX5 Hydrogen: pilot fleet program in Europe. No mass-market new entrants added in 2025, but fleet programs for trucks and buses are accelerating rapidly.

Commercial Vehicle Expansion

The most significant 2025 hydrogen growth is in commercial vehicles: Hyundai Xcient fuel cell trucks in Europe (Switzerland deployment exceeding 1,500 units). Nikola Tre FCEV entering limited North American fleet service. Toyota/Hino Class 8 fuel cell truck trials in California ports. These large-vehicle applications benefit most from hydrogen's rapid refueling and range advantages where battery weight is prohibitive.

Infrastructure Progress

California's hydrogen station network reached 80 public stations by mid-2025, with reliability improving after early station outage problems. Japan maintains 170+ stations. Germany's 100-station network is largely complete. South Korea: 150+ stations serving Nexo fleet. The US DOE H2@Scale investments are funding 50 new corridor stations for commercial trucks, separate from passenger vehicle network.

Price Trajectory

Hydrogen retail price at California stations averaged $22/kg in 2025 — still high but down from $35/kg in 2022. The price trajectory suggests $12–$15/kg is achievable by 2028 as green hydrogen scales. At $15/kg, hydrogen fuel cost per mile becomes competitive with electric vehicles for most applications.
