Hydrogen Fueling Stations in the USA: Where They Are and What's Coming
August 23, 2024 · 6 min read
As of 2024, the US has approximately 60 public hydrogen fueling stations, concentrated almost entirely in California. Here's the current map and expansion plans.
Current State of Hydrogen Infrastructure
The United States has approximately 60 publicly accessible hydrogen fueling stations as of mid-2024. Nearly all are located in California, primarily in the Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, and San Diego metro regions. A handful exist in the Northeast (Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts) and Hawaii.
California's Hydrogen Network
California has invested heavily in hydrogen infrastructure through the California Energy Commission (CEC) and the Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program (ARFVTP). The state-mandated network provides enough coverage for Toyota Mirai and Hyundai NEXO owners in major metros to refuel reliably.
DOE Hydrogen Hubs Program
The Biden Infrastructure Law allocated $8 billion for Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs (H2Hubs). Seven hubs were selected in 2023, covering the Gulf Coast, Appalachia, Pacific Northwest, California, Mid-Atlantic, Heartland, and Midwest. These hubs will dramatically expand hydrogen production and distribution infrastructure over 2024–2030.
Key Expansion Markets
- Texas/Gulf Coast: Leveraging existing natural gas infrastructure for blue hydrogen production
- Pacific Northwest: Green hydrogen from hydroelectric power
- Mid-Atlantic: Connecting Philadelphia-New York corridor
Timeline for Mainstream Availability
Industry analysts project meaningful national hydrogen station coverage by 2030–2035, coinciding with planned FCEV model launches from Toyota, Hyundai, GM, and others. For most of the country, hydrogen vehicles remain impractical for another 5–10 years without significant further investment.
