Why Hydrogen Combustion Instead of Fuel Cells?

Hydrogen fuel cells are more efficient (60%) than combustion engines (40%), but hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2-ICE) offer advantages in manufacturing simplicity, serviceability, and cost. Existing engine manufacturing infrastructure can be adapted for H2-ICE. Fuel cells require platinum-group metal catalysts and specialized manufacturing.

BMW Hydrogen 7 and Project

BMW's Hydrogen 7 (limited production, 2006) demonstrated hydrogen combustion in a modified V12. The current BMW approach focuses on hydrogen as a performance fuel in motorsport applications, with lessons feeding production strategy. BMW's H2-ICE program targets commercial applications where fuel cell costs are prohibitive.

Toyota GR Corolla H2

Toyota entered their GR Corolla in the Super Taikyu endurance race series running on hydrogen combustion — burning liquid hydrogen in a modified 1.6L turbocharged three-cylinder. This active motorsport development generates real-world data on hydrogen combustion durability, reliability, and driver acceptance in competitive conditions.

Technical Challenges

Hydrogen's low density requires fuel injection at very high pressure or liquid hydrogen storage (at −253°C). NOx emissions from hydrogen combustion require exhaust treatment (hydrogen burns hot). Pre-ignition risk requires careful intake temperature management. These challenges are solvable with engineering but add cost versus conventional combustion.
