Honda Clarity Fuel Cell: A Detailed Look at Honda's Hydrogen Pioneer
August 30, 2024 · 6 min read
The Honda Clarity Fuel Cell pioneered segment features like vehicle-to-grid power export and a roomy five-passenger cabin in a hydrogen sedan — though production ended in 2021.
Honda Clarity Fuel Cell Overview
The Honda Clarity Fuel Cell was produced from 2016 through 2021, offered exclusively in California through a lease-only arrangement. It represented Honda's most advanced hydrogen passenger vehicle, building on lessons from the earlier FCX Clarity (2008–2014).
Powertrain Specifications
The Clarity Fuel Cell used a 103 kW (138 hp) electric motor powered by Honda's own fuel cell stack, supplemented by a 1.7 kWh lithium-ion battery for regenerative energy capture. Three carbon-fiber composite hydrogen tanks stored 5.46 kg at 70 MPa (10,000 psi), providing an EPA-rated 366-mile range.
Standout Feature: Vehicle-to-Grid
The Clarity Fuel Cell offered Honda Power Manager capability, allowing the vehicle to serve as a mobile power generator. With an external power exporter, the Clarity could supply up to 6 kW of 120V/240V AC power — enough to run a home during a power outage for approximately seven days on a full tank of hydrogen.
Why Honda Discontinued It
Production costs of fuel cell stacks remained prohibitively high, and California's hydrogen station infrastructure problems (frequent outages, supply shortages) frustrated customers. Honda chose to focus resources on battery EVs and next-generation fuel cell technology for commercial trucks and buses rather than passenger cars.
Honda's Hydrogen Future
Honda plans to return to the passenger FCEV market with a new hydrogen sedan around 2025, leveraging a jointly developed GM fuel cell stack that dramatically reduces cost through economies of scale. The collaboration aims to bring FCEV purchase prices below $60,000.
