How to Clean HHO Generator Plates: Vinegar Method Step by Step
December 5, 2025 · 5 min read
Mineral deposits and oxidation on HHO plates reduce efficiency over time. Cleaning with white vinegar restores near-new performance in under an hour without disassembly.
When to Clean
Clean your HHO plates when you notice: current draw declining for the same electrolyte concentration, visible white or brown scale deposits in the cell, or HHO output (measured in LPM) declining more than 15–20% from original performance. Routine cleaning every 6 months maintains peak performance.
What You'll Need
- White distilled vinegar (5% acetic acid, food grade)
- Distilled water for rinsing
- Small brush (toothbrush works)
- Drain bucket
Full Drain Method (Best)
- Disconnect the HHO cell from the vehicle (unplug electrical and gas line)
- Drain all electrolyte into a sealed container for disposal
- Rinse cell with distilled water 2–3 times
- Fill cell completely with undiluted white vinegar
- Run the cell at 50% duty cycle on a 12V bench supply for 30 minutes (low current, just enough to circulate the vinegar electrochemically)
- Drain the vinegar (it will be discolored — this is the dissolved scale)
- Rinse 3–4 times with distilled water until rinse water is clear
- Refill with fresh electrolyte solution
Quick Method (Between Full Cleanings)
Add 100ml of white vinegar to your normal electrolyte solution and run for 30 minutes, then drain and refill with fresh electrolyte only. This maintenance dose prevents heavy buildup between full cleanings.
Verify Restored Performance
After cleaning and refilling, measure current draw at your standard voltage. It should return to within 10% of original specification. If current is still significantly low, the plates may need replacement.
