HHO on Carbureted Engines: Simpler Installation, Different Tuning

October 5, 2024 · 5 min read

Carbureted engines lack oxygen sensors and fuel injection ECUs, making HHO installation simpler but requiring manual carburetor adjustments to prevent running rich.

Why Carbureted Engines Are Simpler

Fuel injection with O₂ sensor feedback corrects for HHO's lean combustion signal by adding fuel — requiring EFIE correction to maintain gains. Carbureted engines have no such closed-loop feedback. The carburetor delivers the same fuel volume regardless of exhaust composition. HHO addition therefore adds hydrogen without any automatic fuel richening response.

Manual Carburetor Lean-Out

With HHO running, a carbureted engine receives extra combustion support from hydrogen, meaning it can run leaner on gasoline than it could before. The main jet or pilot jet can often be reduced 1–2 sizes to reduce gasoline consumption and optimize the air-fuel-HHO mixture. Start conservatively (1 jet size smaller) and monitor performance before going further.

Air-Fuel Ratio Monitoring

Without factory O₂ sensors, add an aftermarket wideband AFR gauge (Innovate Motorsports LC-2 or similar) to monitor mixture. Install the O₂ bung in the exhaust before tuning. With HHO running, adjust jets to achieve 14.0–14.5:1 AFR at cruise (slightly lean vs 14.7 stoichiometric to leverage HHO's enhanced burn). Recheck at full throttle to ensure safety.

Injection Point on Carbureted Engines

The optimal injection point on a carbureted engine is into the air cleaner housing (before the carburetor throat) or directly into the carburetor throat. Either position ensures thorough mixing before combustion. There's no MAF sensor concern on carbureted engines — pre-carb injection is acceptable.
