How to Install an HHO Generator on Your Car: Step-by-Step

January 19, 2024 · 12 min read

Installing an HHO generator involves mounting the cell, connecting the water reservoir, routing the gas line to the air intake, and wiring it safely to your vehicle's electrical system.

Tools and Materials You Need

  • HHO generator kit (dry cell recommended)
  • Distilled water + KOH electrolyte
  • Bubbler/water trap
  • Vacuum/silicone tubing (6mm)
  • 30A relay and in-line fuse
  • Toggle switch (optional)
  • Drill and mounting hardware
  • Multimeter

Step 1: Choose a Mounting Location

Find a stable, level location in the engine bay away from direct heat sources (exhaust manifold, radiator). The cell should be accessible for refilling. Most installations use the firewall or a fender bracket.

Step 2: Mount the Bubbler

Mount the bubbler/water trap higher than the HHO cell so it catches any electrolyte mist before it enters the engine. Fill it one-third full with distilled water. This is your safety checkpoint — it also acts as a flashback arrestor.

Step 3: Route the Gas Line

Run silicone tubing from the HHO cell outlet → through the bubbler → to a vacuum line on the air intake hose (between the air filter and throttle body). Use a barbed T-fitting to tap into the existing vacuum line.

Step 4: Wire the Electrics

Wire the HHO cell positive terminal through a 30A inline fuse and relay to a switched 12V source (ignition-on circuit). Connect negative to chassis ground. The relay prevents the cell from running when the engine is off. Add an ammeter to monitor current draw.

Step 5: Mix and Add Electrolyte

Mix distilled water with KOH: start with 1 teaspoon per liter and gradually increase until you draw the target amps (8–15A depending on cell size). Never use tap water — minerals cause excessive current and plate damage.

Step 6: Test and Monitor

Start the engine and check for HHO bubbles, confirm current draw with a multimeter, inspect all connections for leaks, and verify the gas line is secure at the air intake. Monitor for the first few days and top off distilled water as needed.
