How Much Load Does an HHO Cell Add?

A typical 6-plate dry cell draws 8–12 amps at 12V, which equals 96–144 watts of electrical power. A 12-plate cell for a large diesel might draw 20–25A. This is real mechanical load on your alternator, which must be factored into the net fuel economy calculation.

What Drives the Alternator?

The alternator is belt-driven by the engine. Every watt of electricity it generates requires fuel to produce. Generating 100W of electricity consumes roughly 0.067 gallons of gasoline per hour under typical conditions — a real cost that partially offsets HHO savings.

The Net Efficiency Calculation

For HHO to produce a net fuel saving, the improvement in combustion efficiency must exceed the fuel cost of generating the electricity. Research and user data suggest that a well-tuned HHO system (with EFIE on fuel-injected vehicles) typically produces 3–5 times more fuel savings than the alternator load costs — a positive net return.

Protecting Your Alternator

Most OEM alternators handle an additional 15A without issue, as they have headroom beyond the normal electrical load. Problems arise when total electrical draw approaches the alternator's rated output (typically 90–150A on modern vehicles). Before installing HHO, calculate your baseline electrical load and verify you have sufficient margin.

When to Upgrade the Alternator

If you're running a large dual-cell HHO system drawing 30+ amps on a vehicle with a small alternator, consider upgrading to a high-output unit. A high-output alternator also charges the battery more efficiently, reducing the fraction of engine power dedicated to electrical generation.
