HHO Generator Troubleshooting: 12 Common Problems and Fixes

April 12, 2024 · 9 min read

No bubbles, too much heat, electrolyte in the engine, rough idle — these are the most common HHO problems and their straightforward solutions.

Problem 1: No HHO Gas Output

Causes: No power to cell, blown fuse, bad relay, no electrolyte. Fix: Check fuse first, then verify relay clicks when ignition is on. Test voltage at cell terminals with multimeter. If power is present, check electrolyte concentration.

Problem 2: Cell Overheating

Causes: Too much electrolyte concentration, no PWM controller, ambient heat. Fix: Dilute electrolyte with distilled water, install or adjust PWM controller, relocate cell away from heat sources.

Problem 3: Electrolyte in Air Intake

Causes: Bubbler missing or bypassed, too much current causing foaming. Fix: Install/repair bubbler, reduce current draw with PWM, ensure bubbler is mounted above the cell.

Problem 4: Rough Idle After Installation

Causes: Air leak at intake tap, too much HHO output for idle conditions, vacuum line issues. Fix: Check all intake connections for leaks, add a flow restrictor to limit HHO at idle.

Problem 5: Check Engine Light (O2 Sensor Codes)

Causes: HHO changing exhaust O2 readings, no EFIE installed. Fix: Install EFIE, or adjust existing EFIE setting to bring fuel trims into normal range.

Problem 6: No Improvement in MPG

Causes: ECU adding fuel back (no EFIE), insufficient HHO output, cell not actually running. Fix: Confirm cell is producing gas, install EFIE, verify MPG measurement method is accurate.

Problem 7: Rapid Water Consumption

Causes: Excessive current, electrolyte too strong, leaking connections. Fix: Reduce current with PWM, check all fittings for leaks.

Problem 8: White Residue on Plates

Causes: Mineral deposits from tap water. Fix: Drain, flush, and always use distilled water only.
