HHO Check Valve: Sizing, Installation, and Why It's Non-Negotiable

February 20, 2026 · 5 min read

The check valve is the primary safety device protecting your HHO cell from engine backfire. Without it, a backfire can travel back through the gas line and cause a dangerous flash at the cell.

What the Check Valve Does

A check valve (one-way valve) allows HHO gas to flow only in one direction: from the cell toward the engine. Any reverse pressure pulse — such as an engine backfire that sends a pressure wave backward through the intake — is blocked by the check valve. Without it, a backfire flame could travel back through the gas line toward your HHO cell.

Sizing the Check Valve

Check valves for HHO use are sized by inner diameter of the gas line. Standard 6mm (1/4") silicone tubing uses a 6mm check valve. The cracking pressure (minimum forward pressure to open) should be very low — 0.1–0.5 PSI is ideal. Too high a cracking pressure reduces HHO flow; too low provides inadequate back-pressure protection.

Installation Position

Install the check valve between the bubbler outlet and the engine intake tap. The order of components from cell to engine should be: HHO cell → bubbler → check valve → intake. The bubbler also acts as a secondary flashback arrestor, but the check valve adds an additional protection layer.

Material Considerations

Use stainless steel or brass check valves for HHO service — never plastic ball-type check valves that can melt near exhaust heat. The valve body can get warm from engine bay temperatures; metal valves handle this safely indefinitely.

Maintenance

Test the check valve annually by blowing through it in both directions. Forward (cell to engine direction) should flow freely. Reverse should block completely. A leaking check valve (allowing reverse flow) must be replaced immediately.
