Green Hydrogen Production: How Renewable Energy Makes Clean H₂

September 13, 2024 · 7 min read

Green hydrogen — produced by electrolyzing water using renewable electricity — offers a pathway to truly carbon-neutral hydrogen fuel, but current costs remain a challenge.

The Color Code of Hydrogen

The hydrogen industry uses color designations to indicate production method and carbon intensity:

  • Gray hydrogen: Steam methane reforming (SMR) from natural gas — 95% of current production, high CO₂ emissions
  • Blue hydrogen: SMR with carbon capture and storage (CCS) — lower emissions but expensive
  • Green hydrogen: Water electrolysis powered by renewable electricity — near-zero emissions
  • Pink/red hydrogen: Nuclear-powered electrolysis — low emissions but controversial

How Green Hydrogen Is Made

Green hydrogen uses large-scale electrolyzers — the industrial equivalent of an HHO generator — powered by solar, wind, or other renewable electricity. Water is split into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen is then compressed, stored, and transported to fueling stations.

Current Cost Challenge

Green hydrogen currently costs $4–10 per kilogram to produce, compared to $0.50–1.50/kg for gray hydrogen from natural gas. The US Department of Energy's "Hydrogen Shot" program targets $1/kg for green hydrogen by 2031 — the "1-1-1" goal (1 dollar, 1 kg, 1 decade).

Efficiency Chain

The roundtrip efficiency of using renewable electricity to make green hydrogen and then using it in a fuel cell is approximately 25–35%. Using the same renewable electricity to charge a battery and drive an EV achieves 70–80% roundtrip efficiency. Green hydrogen makes sense for applications where batteries are impractical — heavy trucks, ships, industrial processes.
