Oil Catch Can vs Air-Oil Separator: Which Is Better for Your HHO Setup?

December 27, 2024 · 5 min read

Both catch cans and air-oil separators prevent PCV oil vapors from reaching your HHO intake tap — but they work differently and suit different engine types.

The Shared Problem: PCV Oil Vapor

Both devices address the same problem: the PCV system routes crankcase gases (containing oil vapor and unburned fuel) into the intake manifold. Over time, this oil vapor coats the throttle body, intake valves, and MAF sensor — reducing efficiency and causing the symptoms described in our throttle body and MAF cleaning articles. HHO owners are particularly affected because oil vapor entering the same intake passage as HHO gas contaminates both the gas stream and intake components.

Oil Catch Can

A catch can is a simple baffled container placed inline with the PCV hose. Oil vapors enter, cool slightly, and oil droplets condense and settle to the bottom. The remaining gas (mostly water vapor and blow-by) continues to the intake. Catch cans are 60–80% efficient at removing oil. Simple, cheap ($20–$80), easy to service.

Air-Oil Separator (AOS)

An AOS uses a more sophisticated centrifugal or coalescing element to separate oil from blow-by gases. Efficiency is higher (85–95%) and many AOS units automatically drain captured oil back to the sump — eliminating the need to periodically empty a reservoir. AOS units cost $150–$400 but are more effective and lower maintenance.

Recommendation

For most vehicles: a quality catch can is sufficient and cost-effective. For direct injection engines with known intake valve deposit problems, or for turbocharged engines where oil-contaminated intake charge causes more harm (oil deposits on intercooler), invest in an AOS. Either device benefits your HHO system by keeping the intake environment clean.
