Toe Angle: The Biggest Fuel Economy Factor

Toe (the angle of the tires when viewed from above) has the greatest impact on fuel economy. Toe-out (tires pointing outward) creates the most rolling resistance. Even 1/8-inch of toe deviation from spec causes measurable fuel waste on a daily basis.

Signs of Misalignment

• Vehicle pulling to one side on a level road
• Uneven tire wear (feathering, edge wear)

When to Check Alignment

Check alignment after hitting a significant pothole or curb, when replacing tires, every 2 years as preventive maintenance, or whenever you notice any pulling or unusual wear. Alignment costs $60–$100 at a tire shop — a worthwhile investment when misalignment is costing you fuel daily.

Tire Rotation Relationship

Regular tire rotation (every 5,000–7,500 miles) spreads alignment-induced wear across all tires, extending tire life and masking early alignment problems. But rotation doesn't fix the underlying alignment — it just delays the consequences.
