Water-Methanol Injection: Better Than Pure Water?
January 13, 2024 · 6 min read
Adding methanol to the injection mixture boosts charge cooling, adds combustion energy, and increases knock resistance beyond what pure water achieves.
Methanol's Role in the Mixture
Methanol (CH₃OH) contributes two benefits beyond water's charge cooling: its own high latent heat of evaporation (473 BTU/lb — nearly 50% more than water per pound) and its combustion energy (fuel value). A 50/50 water-methanol mix vaporizes more energetically than pure water, providing greater charge cooling.
Common Mix Ratios
The most popular water-methanol ratios are: 50/50 (equal parts water and methanol) — the sweet spot for most applications; 30/70 water/methanol — higher performance, more methanol consumed; 70/30 water/methanol — milder cooling, less methanol consumption, appropriate for low-boost or NA engines. Pure water (100/0) is cheapest but provides less cooling per volume than mixed solutions.
Methanol as a Fuel Supplement
Methanol burns cleanly and provides 8,600 BTU/lb of combustion energy (gasoline: 18,400 BTU/lb). At typical injection quantities (3–8% of gasoline consumption), methanol contributes 1–4% of total combustion energy. This allows the ECU to slightly reduce gasoline injection while maintaining the same power output — a genuine fuel displacement effect on top of efficiency improvements.
Octane Equivalence
Methanol has an octane rating of approximately 109 RON, making it an effective anti-knock agent beyond its cooling properties. A 50/50 water-methanol mix injected at 3% of gasoline flow volume effectively raises the octane equivalence of the intake charge by 2–4 points.
Safety Considerations
Methanol is toxic — do not confuse with ethanol. Store clearly labeled. Avoid skin contact and use gloves when filling the reservoir. Methanol fire is nearly invisible in daylight; injector system leaks into hot engine components present a burn risk. Ensure all fittings are secure and use fire-resistant tubing near heat sources.
