Fire Safety for Vehicle Modifications: HHO, LPG, and Fuel System Work

June 15, 2024 · 6 min read

Any vehicle fuel system modification increases fire risk if done incorrectly. Proper materials, routing, and fire suppression planning protect your vehicle and your life.

Fuel-Resistant Materials Are Non-Negotiable

In a hot engine bay, polyurethane and PVC tubing degrades and becomes brittle within months. For HHO lines, oxygen lines, and any modified fuel routing, use only: EPDM rubber (rated for hot water and O₂ exposure), Teflon/PTFE lined stainless braided hose (for high-pressure applications), or silicone rated for engine bay temperatures (150°C+). Never use standard vinyl or polyurethane in engine bay fuel or gas lines.

Routing Away from Heat Sources

HHO and fuel lines should maintain minimum 2 inches clearance from the exhaust manifold, exhaust pipe, and any surface that reaches 120°C+ under normal operation. Use heat shielding (aluminum foil-backed tape or heat sleeves) when routing near hot areas is unavoidable. Hydrogen leaking onto a hot exhaust surface can ignite immediately.

Fire Extinguisher Requirement

Any vehicle with modified fuel systems should carry an appropriately rated fire extinguisher. For HHO, a CO₂ or dry chemical extinguisher rated B (liquid fires) and C (electrical fires) is appropriate. Mount it within driver reach — not in the trunk. A 2.5 lb unit provides approximately 10 seconds of suppression.

Pre-Drive Inspection Habit

After any fuel system modification, implement a brief pre-drive check: visually inspect all connections, check for any odor of electrolyte, and verify no puddles under the vehicle. 30 seconds of inspection before each drive catches developing leaks before they become emergencies.
