A spark plug's job is to ignite the air-fuel mixture with a precise, strong spark at exactly the right moment. A fouled, worn, or misfiring plug fails to ignite the mixture completely. Unburned fuel exits through the exhaust — fuel that was paid for but produced no power. A single misfiring cylinder on a 4-cylinder engine represents 25% power loss.

Signs of Plug Problems

When to Replace

Standard copper plugs: every 30,000 miles. Platinum plugs: every 60,000–80,000 miles. Iridium plugs: every 80,000–100,000 miles. Replace sooner if misfires or fouling occur.

Iridium vs Platinum vs Copper

Iridium plugs use a fine 0.4mm electrode that requires less voltage to fire, provides more consistent spark, and resists erosion. Studies show iridium plugs improve fuel economy by 1–2% vs worn copper plugs in identical engines — not because iridium is magic, but because fresh plugs with a fine electrode fire more reliably under all conditions.

Gap Setting

Plug gap must match manufacturer specification. Too wide a gap requires more voltage (may not fire under high load), too narrow reduces spark energy. When installing new plugs, verify gap with a feeler gauge even if marketed as pre-gapped — manufacturing tolerances vary.
