Spark Plug Gap and Ignition Kernel Size

A wider spark gap produces a larger initial plasma kernel — providing more surface area to ignite the fuel-air mixture. For standard gasoline combustion, larger kernels improve ignition reliability under lean or turbulent conditions. With HHO supplementation, the fast-burning hydrogen-enhanced mixture benefits from robust ignition events.

Stock vs HHO Gap Recommendations

Factory spark plug gaps are set for stock air-fuel ratios and ignition system output. Adding HHO slightly changes the mixture (leaner, more hydrogen) in ways that favor a slightly wider gap. Most HHO enthusiasts run gaps 0.003–0.005 inches wider than stock — for example, 0.048" instead of 0.044" if stock specification is 0.044".

Ignition System Voltage Limits

Wider gaps require higher firing voltage to bridge. A worn coil or aged ignition wires may fire reliably at stock gap but misfire at wider gaps. Before widening gap, verify ignition system health: inspect plug wires or coil-on-plug units, check for carbon tracking, and measure secondary resistance (10,000–15,000 ohm typical for serviceable wires).

Iridium and Platinum Plugs

Fine-electrode iridium and platinum plugs maintain their gap more accurately over time than copper plugs, which wear and grow wider quickly. With HHO, maintaining consistent gap is important for consistent EFIE calibration. Iridium plugs at 2x–3x the price of copper last 4x–5x longer — better economics for the HHO installer who wants stable baseline performance.
