Regenerative Braking in Hybrid and EV Cars: How It Works

April 12, 2024 · 5 min read

Regenerative braking converts kinetic energy back into electricity during deceleration, recovering energy that friction brakes would simply waste as heat.

The Energy Recovery Principle

A conventional braking event converts kinetic energy entirely to heat through friction pad-to-rotor contact. This energy is permanently lost. Regenerative braking uses the electric motor as a generator during deceleration — the motor's resistance slows the vehicle while generating electricity that charges the battery. Depending on driving conditions, 15–30% of kinetic energy is recovered.

How the Motor Becomes a Generator

An electric motor and generator are the same device in different operating modes. When driving current through the motor, it produces torque (motor mode). When external mechanical force spins the rotor (deceleration), it produces electrical current (generator mode). The inverter controls which mode is active based on throttle and brake input.

Efficiency of Regeneration

The round-trip efficiency of regenerative braking (kinetic energy → electrical energy → back to kinetic energy on acceleration) is approximately 60–70%. The losses occur in the motor/generator (conversion efficiency) and the battery (charge/discharge efficiency). Despite these losses, 65% recovery is vastly better than 0% from friction brakes.

Maximizing Regeneration

Anticipating stops early and coasting with light regen braking recovers more energy than heavy braking applications (where friction brakes supplement regen to provide adequate deceleration). One-pedal driving modes maximize regen by applying strong motor resistance on throttle lift. Following distance management to enable coasting is the primary driver skill for maximizing EV range.
