Intake Manifold Water Injection vs Port Injection: Which Location Is Best?

Where you inject water in the intake tract significantly affects droplet size, charge cooling effectiveness, and distribution to cylinders. Here's the optimal placement guide.
Three Injection Locations
Water or water-methanol can be injected at multiple points in the intake tract, each with distinct advantages:
- Pre-intercooler (charge pipe, before the IC): Cools the intercooler air and the intercooler itself
- Post-intercooler (charge pipe, after the IC): Maximizes charge cooling effect — cooling air that is already cooled
- Intake manifold or throttle body: Equalizes distribution across cylinders
Post-Intercooler: Best for Charge Cooling
Injecting after the intercooler maximizes the temperature drop of the air entering the engine. The intercooler has already done its work; water injection takes the charge down another 30–80°F. This is the most common and effective location for anti-knock purposes.
Pre-Intercooler: Benefits Intercooler Performance
Water injected before the intercooler cools the hot post-turbo air before it reaches the intercooler. This reduces the heat load on the intercooler, allowing it to perform closer to maximum efficiency. However, some of the water evaporation benefit is "wasted" on the intercooler rather than the combustion chamber.
Manifold Injection: Best for Distribution
Injecting into the intake manifold or near the throttle body provides excellent cylinder-to-cylinder distribution. Each cylinder sees nearly equal water injection. The downside is less time for water to vaporize and mix before entering cylinders.
Recommendation
For anti-knock on boosted engines: post-intercooler injection is optimal. For distributional fairness and valve/combustion cleaning: manifold injection. For maximum intercooler effectiveness: pre-intercooler. Many serious builds run two nozzles covering two zones simultaneously.
