On-Demand HHO vs Stored Hydrogen: The Key Differences
March 22, 2024 · 6 min read
On-demand HHO generators produce gas as needed from water, while stored hydrogen systems carry compressed H₂ in tanks. Each approach has very different safety profiles and practical applications.
Two Approaches to Hydrogen in Vehicles
Hydrogen can benefit internal combustion engines in two fundamentally different ways: as an on-demand supplement produced from water in real time (HHO generators), or as stored compressed or liquefied hydrogen used as a primary or supplemental fuel.
On-Demand HHO Systems
HHO generators produce hydrogen and oxygen simultaneously, directly from water, using electrical power from the alternator. Key characteristics:
- No hydrogen storage — gas is made and consumed immediately
- Zero tank explosion risk
- Simple installation in any vehicle
- Limited by alternator power (practical maximum ~30A)
- Works as a combustion supplement, not primary fuel
Stored Hydrogen Systems
Vehicles like the Toyota Mirai and Honda Clarity use hydrogen fuel cells or direct hydrogen combustion with on-board storage tanks at 700 bar (10,000 psi). These are fundamentally different from HHO systems:
- Primary fuel source, not a supplement
- Requires hydrogen fueling infrastructure
- Complex pressure vessel safety systems
- Purpose-built vehicles only
Why On-Demand HHO is the Practical Choice
For the average vehicle owner wanting to improve MPG today, on-demand HHO is the only feasible option. Stored hydrogen requires specialized infrastructure, certified pressure vessels, and purpose-built vehicles. On-demand HHO can be added to any existing vehicle for a few hundred dollars.
Safety Comparison
On-demand HHO wins decisively on safety. Since gas is produced and consumed immediately, there is no stored energy reservoir that can rupture. The maximum danger is a small flash from a backfire — easily managed with a check valve and bubbler.
