Solar-Powered HHO: Using PV Panels to Generate Hydrogen from Sunlight

The Solar + HHO Concept

A photovoltaic (PV) panel produces DC electricity from sunlight — the same type of electricity needed for water electrolysis. Connecting a solar panel to an HHO electrolyzer creates a renewable hydrogen production system requiring no grid electricity or fuel. While a small panel can't produce enough HHO to supplement a running engine, it can accumulate hydrogen in a storage buffer over several hours of sunlight for controlled release.

Sizing a Solar HHO System

A 100W solar panel (average output ~60W in real conditions) drives approximately 5A at 12V. A small 5-plate electrolyzer at 5A produces about 0.25 LPM of HHO. In 6 hours of useful sunlight: 90 liters of HHO stored or used. This is a modest but real supplement for a parked vehicle charging its HHO system during the day.

Practical Application: Parked HHO Pre-Production

Some experimenters pre-produce HHO while the vehicle is parked using solar panels, storing the gas in low-pressure bladder tanks. When the vehicle starts, stored HHO supplements the engine in addition to on-demand production. The safety considerations for any stored hydrogen (pressure, leak risk) require careful engineering.

Commercial Scale

At commercial scale, solar-powered electrolysis is the core of "green hydrogen" production — the same principle but at gigawatt scale rather than 100W. The fundamental chemistry is identical.
