HHO Bubbler Setup: The Safety Device You Cannot Skip

May 24, 2024 · 5 min read

The HHO bubbler serves two critical roles: filtering electrolyte mist from the gas stream and acting as a backfire arrestor. Here's how to install and maintain it correctly.

What a Bubbler Does

HHO gas produced in the cell carries microscopic droplets of electrolyte solution (KOH mist). If this reaches the engine, it causes rough running, sensor damage, and potentially harmful aluminum corrosion in intake passages. The bubbler scrubs these droplets by passing the gas through a water layer before it enters the engine.

Backfire Protection

An engine backfire sends a flame pulse backward through the intake. Without protection, this flame can travel back through the gas line and reach your HHO cell — potentially causing a dangerous reaction. The water in the bubbler quenches any backfire flame before it can reach the cell. A check valve further upstream provides additional protection.

Correct Bubbler Setup

  • Use a sealed container (dedicated HHO bubbler or repurposed glass jar with proper fittings)
  • Gas inlet tube must extend below the water surface — this creates the bubbling action that filters the gas
  • Gas outlet should draw from above the water surface
  • Mount the bubbler vertically, outlet at top
  • Fill with plain distilled water to half-full
  • Mount higher than the HHO cell so gravity prevents electrolyte siphoning

Maintenance

Replace bubbler water monthly or whenever it turns cloudy or yellow. Yellow discoloration indicates electrolyte carryover — if your bubbler water is frequently discolored, reduce current draw or increase bubbler container size to provide a longer gas path through the water.
