Post-2007 diesel engines in the US must comply with strict EPA emissions regulations. They use several aftertreatment systems: a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) that traps soot, and a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system that uses Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to convert NOx to nitrogen and water.

How HHO Reduces Soot Output

Diesel soot (particulate matter) is primarily formed from incomplete combustion of fuel-rich zones in the combustion chamber. HHO supplementation improves combustion completeness — specifically reducing the oxygen-deficient rich zones where soot forms. Real-world results show 20–40% soot reduction with properly sized HHO on diesel engines.

DPF Regeneration Benefits

Less soot entering the DPF means longer intervals between regeneration cycles. Forced DPF regenerations consume additional fuel (the ECU injects extra fuel to heat the filter for soot burn-off) and impose heat stress on the filter substrate. Fewer regenerations save fuel and extend DPF life.

DEF Consumption Impact

HHO typically reduces NOx slightly by lowering peak combustion temperatures. Lower NOx means the SCR system requires less DEF to process the exhaust. Some diesel HHO users report 10–15% lower DEF consumption — a secondary cost saving alongside fuel economy improvement.

The consistent 50–150°F EGT reduction from HHO benefits the DOC and DPF by operating them at lower temperatures — extending catalyst life and reducing thermal degradation of the DPF substrate over time.
