How Oil Affects Fuel Economy

Engine oil lubricates dozens of rotating and sliding surfaces. Friction at these surfaces consumes engine power that could otherwise propel the vehicle. Thicker oil resists flow more than thin oil, creating more friction, especially during the first minutes of operation when oil is cold and hasn't circulated fully.

Viscosity Ratings Explained

Multi-grade oils (e.g., 5W-30) have two ratings: the W (winter) number indicates cold-weather viscosity; the second number indicates hot-running viscosity. A 5W-30 oil flows like a 5-weight oil in cold conditions (easy cold start) and like a 30-weight when hot (adequate protection at temperature).

Switching to the Right Oil

Most modern engines specify 5W-30 or 0W-20. Using 10W-40 instead of 5W-30 increases cold-weather viscosity significantly, increasing fuel consumption during warm-up. Always use the manufacturer-specified viscosity — deviating heavier costs MPG without benefit.

Synthetic vs Conventional

Full synthetic motor oils outperform conventional in multiple ways:

  • More uniform molecular structure = lower friction at all temperatures
  • Better cold-flow properties = faster lubrication at startup
  • Maintains viscosity better at high temperatures
  • Independent testing shows 1–3% fuel economy improvement vs conventional at the same viscosity rating

Friction Modifiers

Some oils contain molybdenum disulfide or other friction modifiers that form a low-friction boundary layer on metal surfaces. These can provide an additional 0.5–1% fuel economy benefit. GM and Honda specify friction-modified oils for some models specifically for this MPG benefit.
