The History of Brown's Gas: From Yull Brown to Modern HHO
May 3, 2024 · 7 min read
Brown's Gas — named after Bulgarian inventor Yull Brown — has a fascinating history spanning decades of controversy, scientific investigation, and practical application.
Who Was Yull Brown?
Yull Brown was a Bulgarian-born Australian inventor who in the 1970s and 1980s developed and patented devices for producing and using oxyhydrogen gas from water electrolysis. He called the mixture "Brown's Gas" and claimed it had unusual properties beyond conventional oxyhydrogen — specifically that the gas was in a monatomic or water plasma state.
Early Patents and Demonstrations
Brown received several patents in Australia and the US during the 1970s–1990s. He demonstrated his gas cutting metal at temperatures far below what conventional oxyhydrogen could achieve, and claimed it could implode rather than explode under certain conditions. These claims attracted both scientific curiosity and skepticism.
The Stanley Meyer Water Fuel Cell
In the 1980s–1990s, American inventor Stanley Meyer claimed to have developed a "water fuel cell" that could power a car entirely on water. Meyer's technology attracted enormous attention and controversy before his death in 1998. While his specific claims remain unverified, his work brought public awareness to water-based hydrogen supplementation.
Modern HHO Technology
Today's HHO generators bear little resemblance to Brown's or Meyer's original devices. Modern dry-cell generators are based on well-understood electrochemistry. The term "HHO" (popularized in the 2000s–2010s online communities) distinguishes the automotive supplementation application from industrial oxyhydrogen torches.
Where We Are Today
HHO generator technology has become a legitimate aftermarket industry, with peer-reviewed studies confirming measurable combustion improvements in controlled tests. The technology is firmly established in the diesel truck and fleet management markets, where ROI is most easily demonstrated.
